We’re hiring 3 new officers to work alongside many of the teams that maintain and operate the tidal defences through London, the largest of which is the Thames Barrier - where you’ll be based.

This role is extremely varied and draws upon a diverse range of transferrable skills. Working closely with a wide variety of colleagues, you can expect to be involved in any of the following:

• Coastal flood forecasting and warning
• Asset management
• Supporting surge barrier maintenance projects and contracts
• Assisting with surge barrier operation
• Incident management (training and exercising incident staff)
• Emergency planning

The posts are ideal for graduates who are looking to begin a progressive career in flood risk management. There will be plenty of opportunities to develop your professional and personal skills working alongside a very experienced workforce.

There are also opportunities to get involved with our flood incident response. There are flexible range of roles you can volunteer for and you’ll get all the training and support you need. Some of these roles require staff to be on standby overnight and during weekends for up to a week at a time, attracting further pay and time off in lieu.
The various teams’ responsibilities include tidal forecasting, asset management, emergency planning, regulating of privately owned defences and barrier operation.

We’re committed to managing London’s tidal flood risk 24/7/365 and work alongside the rest of the Environment Agency to advise the government and provide a national service.

Whilst providing support to many different colleagues, the three posts will share the same line manager, who will help manage their workload and ensure their ongoing development.
Applicants will need to hold a degree (or equivalent qualification) ideally in a science, environmental or technology discipline. Whilst experience in the environmental sector is preferable – do not be put off applying if you don’t have this, the key things we’re looking for are transferrable skills and capabilities.

Excellent communication skills are a must as you’ll be working with a diverse range of people. You’ll also need:

• An understanding of river and coastal processes
• Evidence that you can develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers
• To demonstrate you have delivered work by planning, tracking, gathering and maintaining data/information
• To have worked on own initiative and part of a team to make decisions and achieve planned outcomes
• Good IT skills and an ability to use MS Office. GIS skills are preferable, but not essential.
Closing Date: 14th January 2018 at 23:55 hours

This role will be based at the Thames Barrier and therefore attracts inner London weighting (£3,579).
