Lead Team Member of our Field Operations Team involves working on our rivers and tidal defences, preventing/responding to flooding and pollution.

You will be part of a diverse team of 13 contributing to the development and management of small projects such as vegetation management, construction work, maintaining rivers and repairing our defences to provide a high standard of flood protection to our many customers. You will work efficiently, safely and to a high standard of workmanship, often working within CDM regulations.

This role is 75% field based and 25% office based. You will need to be out in all weather conditions, whether it’s leading a group cutting weed in the river as part of our annual maintenance programme, repairing a fence at one of our many critical sites, assisting with the removal of a fallen tree from the river or responding to pollution at a fishery, every day will be different.

Once trained you’ll take part in an emergency call out rota to respond to pollution and flooding incidents, sometimes at short notice. Our reputation depends on the people working for us and you will be expected to act professionally, to motivate and encourage the same from those around you.
The team consists of men and women, the role is open to anyone. We carry out a maintenance programme on rivers and watercourses in Kent & East Sussex, from Gatwick to Ashford and from Rochester to Crowborough responding to environmental incidents, such as flooding and pollution, both day and night. We also work across the country when other areas need assistance responding to environmental incidents.
You’ll need to be:

- A real team player willing to work with others;
- Have a positive, adaptable approach with a ‘can do’ attitude;
- Able to provide leadership on health & safety, conservation & environmental awareness ensuring compliance with Environment Agency policies and standards;
- Able to communicate effectively with team members, landowners and the public and be able to make decisions sometimes under pressure;
- Able to organise and arrange for equipment & materials to be available at a work site to enable work to be carried out on time and to a high standard.

We would like you to have a good level of environmental awareness and be able to use a range of different tools, although training will be given.

You will need some experience using, or be willing to learn to use, tablet-style computers, mobile technology and Microsoft software.
