Hertfordshire and North London Area is one of the most densely populated and economically active areas in the UK. It is going through an unprecedented phase of growth and regeneration. Groundwater is particularly sensitive in the area; the area is dependent on groundwater as a source of potable water and it provides base flow to our rivers. As a Technical Specialist in the Contaminated Land & Groundwater (GWLQ) team you will contribute by assisting decision making with respect to the protection of groundwater quality and redevelopment of land impacted by historical activities. You will be working on tough issues like land use intensification, development of brownfield land and on significant infrastructural projects. You will be working with other teams and experts internally, within the Environment Agency, and local authorities and developers externally.

This role will predominantly be focused on supporting our planning related and environmental permitting workload and is based at our Welwyn Garden City office.
The Groundwater and Land Quality Team is focused on protecting our groundwater resources, improving groundwater quality and dealing with the legacy of land contamination. We provide technical advice and support to other Environment Agency teams, Local Authorities and other applicants to ensure that the protection of groundwater quality is considered as part of planning and permitting decisions.
We are seeking a numerate individual with a strong environment science, hydrogeology and/or chemistry background. You'll have several years of UK brownfield industry experience and a proven track record of working unsupervised on land and groundwater contamination issues.

Ideally you are qualified to MSc level, and working towards chartership with a recognised environmental professional body.

You use your initiative to deliver successful outcomes for the environment. You will make technical decisions using well-developed time management, data management, IT and interpersonal skills. Ideally you are familiar using quantitative risk assessment tools (e.g. Consim, Landsim, RTM) and databases.

You must be willing to undertake specialist or further training where required.

The role will be located at the Environment Agency’s (EA) Alchemy office located in Welwyn Garden City that has limited parking.

Occasional travel to other offices and sites may be required. As such a full UK driving licence is desirable.
