We’re looking for an Environment Monitoring Assistant in our Sampling and Collection Team to carry out field-based tasks across various disciplines including fish surveys, ecology, hydrometry and water quality sampling. The post will focus delivery of the ecology, hydrometry and water quality programme. When necessary, you will help with incident response team and investigation.

Field tasks will involve working in or near water, lifting and carrying samples, equipment and instrumentation in accordance with current Health and Safety procedures. You are required to ensure safe working practices, comply with policies and procedures ensuring samples are taken safely and to best possible data quality.
Samplers are uniformed and visible to the public and must be polite courteous and personable.
An equipped van will be provided to collect physical samples, tasks are issued and data collected on smart mobile devices.
The Sampling and Collection team is friendly and supportive and provides key data to the wider business. This data underpins much of the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities and provides input into models for flood risk and water resources, the data is also used for compliance under the Environmental Permitting Regulations for discharges as well as providing core data for reporting under the key Directives for DEFRA and the State of our Environment.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, have an eye for detail and have a passion for the environment, preferably with some experience of environmental fieldwork. You must be comfortable working safely in or near water and be able to swim.
You may have to work in adverse weather condition and you will be confident working with wildlife and livestock.
You will be competent in the use of computers and mobile information technology devices. You will be able to work on your own initiative and within a team, so great communication skills are essential.
Ideally, you will have some knowledge of freshwater fish survey techniques.
The Environment Agency will offer excellent training and personal development opportunities to the successful candidate.
You will have a full driving licence, preferable with the B and C endorsements that allow you to tow trailers.

Although based out these offices the role covers an area across the whole of the West Midlands Region.
