The Environmental Crime Officer is a crucial role within our Thames Enforcement Team. Our focus is on waste crime but we also support our colleagues in taking enforcement action in response to other environmental offences. In this role, you could be dealing with a small ‘one man band’ illegally burning waste one day and the directors of an international company fraudulently avoiding landfill tax the next. No two days, site visits or investigations are the same.

The crimes we investigate often deal with deliberate behaviour over long periods of time, meaning our cases take time to complete. You would be required to engage with operators to support them in achieving compliance. If our advice is ignored and illegal behaviour continues, our enforcement activity escalates.

This leads to challenging conversations with sometimes confrontational individuals, requiring you to adapt your communication style. Ultimately, you will end up putting case files together and presenting your evidence in court.

You are likely to be dealing with a combination of large, serious investigations and a number of smaller ones. You will have a complex workload, but you will work with the team to ensure our response to criminality is proportionate and consistent.
Our small but busy Thames Enforcement Team covers all of Oxfordshire, Reading and Swindon and parts of Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, West Berkshire, Surrey, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire. The team’s principal objective is to prevent, disrupt and enforce against environmental crime in line with national, organisational and local priorities.
You don’t need to be from a law enforcement background but you will need to demonstrate how you meet the requirements of the role. At application stage we do not expect you to have a thorough working knowledge of the legislative framework in which we operate, but an understanding of the legislation that applies to conducting criminal investigations is important. If you have relevant transferable skills not related to law enforcement, please tell us about them too.

You may have experience of handling multiple projects at any one time, working in a challenging environment or dealing with customer complaints. We’re looking for someone with good communication skills, an ability to handle a varied workload and who can ultimately deliver successful outcomes.
