This is a unique opportunity to lead a step change within the Environment Agency’s approach to future funding. Transforming our Navigation business, at the same time as driving greater commercialisation throughout the organisation to make the most of our existing assets, such as land, research, intellectual property.

We are looking for someone with strong commercial leadership and entrepreneurial skills, with drive and determination to succeed.

This role will be key in developing and implementing a strategy to realise the vision of significantly more money being invested in creating a better place for people and the environment and supporting sustainable growth by:

Overseeing the whole Navigation business, working closely with operational colleagues to set the priorities, secure the resource (people and money) to deliver the business;

Developing commercial and other funding opportunities to make sure Navigation is sufficiently funded;

Working with external partners to oversee the delivery of the service and that it meets customer demands;

Seeking to exploit commercial and other business development opportunities to generate income for the Environment Agency both in England and overseas;

Working with Defra, other Arm’s Length Bodies and Her Majesty’s Treasury to make sure that any barriers to exploit these opportunities are addressed.
The role sits in the Environment and Business directorate reporting to the Director of Future Funding but operates across the organisation. The Deputy Director of Navigation and Commercial Development leads a small team consisting of the Navigation team and the newly created Commercial Team.
In addition to strong commercial leadership and entrepreneurial skills, you will also have outstanding engagement and influencing skills, with an ability to build relationships with key partners. It will be these commercial skills and business acumen, rather than your sector-specific knowledge, which will set you apart.

Essential skills and experience:

Experience and track record of success in developing new business opportunities that generates new sources of income

Proven ability to shape strategic business direction which is grounded in organisational context and takes into account political, economic, social, technological or environmental developments;

Ability and experience in driving through positive changes in organisational design and culture

Well-developed political acumen and an aptitude for influencing internally and externally at Director/Board level to deliver for the organisation;

Articulate and confident when communicating; able to convey complex issues concisely, uses compelling narrative and data to persuade senior stakeholders internally and externally
