You’ll need to be good at explaining complex concepts to non-economists and be able to build and maintain close working relationships with other scientists and policy-makers inside and outside the Environment Agency. You will need to be good at recognising opportunities for new research that pushes the boundaries of economic knowledge and creates useful applied results that can improve what the Agency does and how it does it. The work involves:
- Understanding the needs of internal clients and working with them to clearly define the problems they need to solve.
- Helping to lead the work of the team in delivering high quality analysis with impact.
- Developing innovative approaches to solving environmental problems.
- Providing analysis, interpretation and translation to support action by the Environment Agency and others.
- Leading work to steer and shape research to fill critical evidence gaps.
The Environment Agency is a £1billion organisation covering a huge variety of areas, from flooding to waste crime to fisheries. Economic evidence is crucial to making the case for what we do, how we do it and why. The team’s priorities are to: value the impact of our activities on outcomes for people and the environment; make a credible case for funding those outcomes, and help the Environment Agency to make better-informed and consistent decisions.
This is a scientific role providing complex, technical support to others. Whether you developed your expertise through academic research or as a practitioner you will:
- Have an excellent understanding of economics in general and environmental economics in particular.
- Have proven expertise in using economic analysis in the regulatory and/or environmental spheres.
- Possess experience in providing economic advice to non-specialists.
- Hold a relevant degree and ideally a Masters.
- Be highly numerate with demonstrable skills in economic analysis and robust quality assessment of economic work.
- Have the ability to develop and articulate a vision to develop an area of work.
- Be a good communicator, able to deliver work for and with a wide range of customers.
- Have excellent project management skills.
