We are looking for Senior Environmental Project Managers to join our National Environmental Assessment and Sustainability team (NEAS). NEAS undertake environmental assessment of all the Environment Agency’s capital projects and the Strategic Environmental Assessment of relevant Strategies and Plans to ensure projects fully comply with environmental legislation and policy.

As a Senior Environmental Project Manager, you will provide quality advice on environmental issues. You will advise on the level of environmental assessment needed to ensure that our projects are legally compliant and environmental risks and opportunities are highlighted. Our Senior Environmental Project Managers work on our more complex, challenging projects, scoping the environmental elements of work, planning and co-ordinating the delivery of Environmental Impact Assessments and influencing a range of environmental stakeholders at feasibility, planning, design and construction stages. You will oversee the identification, management, mitigation and reduction of environmental risk on projects as well as promoting sustainable approaches such as low carbon solutions.

You’ll be involved in ground-breaking and award-winning work, leaving a legacy for the future through effective collaboration across internal departments, the wider Defra group, statutory bodies, our Supply Partners, businesses and communities.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
NEAS is divided into 6 operational Hubs, with each being led by an Operational Unit Manager overseeing 10-15 staff, supported by Principal Environmental Specialists and Team Leaders. Each Team Leader manages several Environmental Project Managers (EPMs) and Senior Environmental Project Managers (SEPMs) who work collaboratively with our environmental supply partners to provide technical expertise and support the day-to-day delivery of projects within our flood & coastal erosion risk management programme.
Preferable to be educated to Degree standard in an environmental science or a related subject, however not essential.

Demonstrate previous experience in managing the environmental risk in projects

Considerable involvement within infrastructure projects

Experience as an environmental adviser within multi-disciplinary project teams

Excellent communication and influencing skills with stakeholders as relationship management is a key element of the role

Required to demonstrate experience as an environmental adviser within multi-disciplinary project teams 

Experience in mentoring and supporting colleagues to in a diverse and inclusive environment

Qualified or conversant in project management terminology is advantageous

Membership of a professional environmental institute would be preferred however not essential and if successful the agency can be involved with obtaining and funding membership.

It would be advantageous to have knowledge of flood and coastal risk management and FCRM Project appraisal however in house training is available.

A driving licence is ideally required.

As a national role the office location is flexible. The role will require regular travel to project sites and project team meetings in other Agency and Supply Partner offices. Overnight stays will be necessary from time to time.
