With a changing climate and a growing population, the risks from flooding, coastal erosion, drought environmental degradation and habitat loss are increasing. The Environment Agency plays a vital role in tackling these issues, and we need to secure more external investment to keep people safe and leave the environment in a better state for the next generation.
This role will sit within the Green Finance team, who work to unlock the opportunity for large scale investment in the natural environment and climate resilience. To achieve this the team work on a number of levels:
• Identifying revenue streams to enable projects to go ahead
• Creating an evidence base for policies that can unlock barriers and opportunities for financing
• Identifying scalable approaches to funding and finance that can be used across the country
The role sits within the Future Funding function of the Environment and Business directorate, reporting to the Green Finance Manager, but operates across the organisation. The role will be part of a small team who support the delivery of the organisational wide approach to securing sources of investment in the environment, but we expect it to work very closely with colleagues across the business.
We are looking for someone who combines excellent people and influencing skills with strong problem structuring and creative thinking skills. You will enjoy developing new relationships with partners, be ambitious and committed to demonstrating real on the ground progress in environmental outcomes.
Essential skills and experience:
- Demonstrable experience of policy, regulation and/or investment
- Knowledge of current and emerging green finance policy and trends
- Innovative self-starter who takes initiative
- Strong engagement and influencing skills
- High-level of creative thinking and willingness to try new things
Desirable:
- Strong understanding of local growth, local authorities and economic development
- An understanding of data and metrics for reporting
- An understanding of environmental/ecosystem markets
- Track record of developing new funding mechanisms with a range of partners
- Good understanding of current UK environmental policy
We may use the outcome of this recruitment to fill any future vacancies that arise at this grade within 6 months of the interview.

Interviews will be conducted remotely and are likely to take place during January 2023.

As a national role, location is flexible but must be office based. Travel to other Environment Agency offices will be required on occassion.

Successful candidates for this role will be required to undertake an incident role.
