Geomorphology Technical Officer - 24925

The Biodiversity and Geomorphology team are looking for an enthusiastic fluvial geomorphologist to provide advice, guidance, and technical support across the Hertfordshire and North London area. In this job you’ll be an advisor on fluvial geomorphology.

Your work will help to promote nature based solutions and the delivery of healthier and sustainable systems that are resilient to climate change and achieve objectives set by legislation (e.g. WFD) and policy (e.g. 25 Year Environment Plan).
You will provide input into a range of projects. You will help identify, design and deliver a programme of mitigation and restoration activities in surface waters to deliver measurable environmental outcomes. Your work with operational staff will ensure we prevent or minimise ecological impacts from our own activities and those we regulate.
You will proactively engage staff across the business, communicating with colleagues internally and externally, to successfully build trusted networks and strong partnerships, to maximise delivery.

You will keep up to date on changing legislation and best practice in order to inform internal priorities and direction. We’d aim to shape the job in a way that builds on your strengths and interests and reflects the developing needs of the business.

The HNL Biodiversity & Geomorphology team is a friendly, supportive and experienced team. Mentoring and development will be offered by those on the team and there is a lot of collaborative working. You will be part of a team who: regulate compliance in planning and development, work with external partners to deliver restoration, liaise with colleagues in other parts of the business including flood and coastal risk management, asset performance engineers, and water resources.

You will need:

- Enthusiasm and credibility: You’ll be a passionate and confident geomorphology champion.
- Sound technical knowledge: you’ll know what geomorphology is and why it matters. You’ll understand climate change. You will have a relevant degree and a deeper understanding of the subject (e.g. some applied experience or preferably a postgraduate degree).
- You’ll be able build trusted working relationships and communicate clearly, in order to guide and to influence what people do.
- To be open to innovative ways of working, especially new opportunities to work with nature.

You may also have some of the following: technical geomorphology skills in fieldwork, GIS or environmental modelling; experience or knowledge about current environmental challenges and topics such as Environmental Land Management; experience of managing coastal or fluvial flood risk; experience of river and floodplain restoration.
