Water companies are funded over the next 5 years to develop regional and national Strategic Resource Options (SROs) such as reservoirs and water transfers.

Working primarily with technical team members and a diverse range of stakeholders including RAPID, water companies, regional groups and Area specialists, your role will involve leading ecological technical assessment and ensuring a consistent approach is taken to environmental assessment across all SROs. This will include reviewing scope, methodologies and outputs of monitoring, assessment and modelling programmes for the SROs. You will help to scope, develop and agree appropriate mitigation measures where necessary.

You will work with specialists across the organisation to deliver a consistent approach to ecological monitoring and assessment. Central to this role will be the ability to take a methodical, scientifically rigorous approach in understanding the significance and potential impacts of changes to ecological regimes and their consequences to Water Framework Directive classifications.

Your great communications skills and ability to build relationships quickly will ensure you succeed in this role.
Positioned in one of our Southeast operational Areas, you will work in the Environmental Monitoring (Analysis and Reporting) team, supporting the ‘National Appraisal Unit’ to oversee the environmental assessments of strategic water resources supply options and provide timely, consistent and robust evidence-based recommendations to RAPID and other key stakeholders.
The role involves working as part of a virtual team along with RAPID and the academic project partners.
We are seeking an individual with extensive ecological monitoring and assessment experience. You’ll be qualified to at least degree standard in a relevant discipline, be highly numerate with strong analytical skills and have experience working on multi-stakeholder projects, as well as, delivering results to tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will have all/a majority, of the following skills:

-Highly motivated self-starter/self-learner with good interpersonal skills and commitment to continuous improvement.
-Excellent understanding of aquatic ecology and Water Environment Regulations assessment
-Experience of ecological monitoring and assessment techniques
-Good problem solving, decision making and scientific reasoning skills
-Good personal resilience
-Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships.
-Adept at working both collaboratively, as part of a virtual team, and independently
-Ability to handle multiple work streams and priorities
The role will require some travel to other Environment Agency sites, external meetings and occasional overnight stays.
