Water companies are funded over the next 5 years to develop regional and nationally Strategic Resource Options (SROs) such as reservoirs and water transfers.

Working primarily with technical team members and a diverse range of stakeholders including RAPID, water companies, regional groups, and Area specialists your role will involve leading technical water resources and hydrological assessment of SRO in the Midlands. This will include reviewing the scope of gated assessments, including monitoring and methodologies proposed to understand water resources impacts of proposed SRO. Supporting assessments of water availability, you will also review the calibration, validation and outputs of hydrological models to understand future operation of SROs. You will help to scope, develop and agree appropriate mitigation measures and permit conditions where necessary.

Keeping track of developments in water resources legislation, strategy and policy you will ensure that water resources assessments are fit for the future.

Your great communications skills and ability to build relationships quickly will make you a success in this role.
Positioned in one of our Midlands operational Areas, you will work in either the Water Transfer Team or integrated Environment Planning team, supporting the ‘National Appraisal Unit’ to oversee the environmental assessments of strategic water resources supply options and provide timely, consistent and robust evidence-based recommendations to RAPID and other key stakeholders.
The role will also involve working as part of a virtual team along with RAPID and the academic project partners.
We are seeking an individual with extensive water resources and hydrological modelling experience. You’ll be qualified to at least degree standard in a relevant discipline, be highly numerate with strong analytical skills and have experience working on multi-stakeholder projects and delivering results to tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will have all/most of the following skills:

-Highly motivated self-starter/self-learner with good interpersonal skills and commitment to continuous improvement
-Experience of developing, interpreting and applying Abstraction Licensing Strategies and supporting resource assessments
-Experience of hydraulic and hydro-ecological modelling
-Knowledge of the Tame, Trent & Humber river catchments
-Ability to understand and communicate complex technical concepts to different audiences
-Good problem solving, decision making and scientific reasoning skills
-Good personal resilience
-Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships
-Identifies potential problems and proactively innovates solutions
-Adept at working collaboratively, in a virtual team, and independently
-Ability to handle multiple work-streams and priorities
The role will require some travel to other Environment Agency sites, external meetings and occasional overnight stays.
