It’s an exciting time to join the Environment Agency as we step up our actions to address the climate and nature emergency. Do you want to accelerate our journey to Net Zero by establishing the link between Net Zero and Resource consumption in our business? Do you understand how the circular economy can help delivery Net Zero and do you know how to apply that? You will help define sustainable resource consumption, in line with planetary limits for us and design our approach for how we stay within those limits. Delivering commitments 4-6 of eMission2030.
- Establish a resource consumption footprint.
- Recommending and implementing the approach for the EA to take on resource optimisation, including developing delivery plans, including how we will track and assess performance.
- Reviewing the organisation’s existing resource management policies (like timber or steel), processes, and procedures, and working with others to revise and develop these, as appropriate.
- Providing specialist advice to colleagues to mitigate resource optimisation risks and to ensure decisions are technically sound and aligned with legal and EA frameworks.
- Reporting and communicating progress on the EA’s resource optimisation commitments, including commissioning and utilising relevant evidence and data.

The Sustainable Business Team (SBT) is a welcoming one. We are part of the Chief Operating Officer Directorate. Our role is to act as a corporate enabler, supporting colleagues across the EA (Area/Directorate) Defra and our suppliers, to deliver eMission2030: the EA’s sustainability strategy. This strategy encompasses delivery of our ambition to become a net zero organisation by 2030, as well as championing resource optimisation, environmental net gain and benefiting people, wildlife and communities.
The generic requirements are set out in the BS06job profile. The key competences for this role are:
- Significant experience of resource optimisation agenda, particularly with respect to, sustainable purchasing/contracts, consumption reduction and circular economy.
- Understanding of how to integrate resource optimisation within a business context, through sound judgement, engagement, networking, and relationship-building skills.
- Substantial experience of delivering resource optimisation results through others: within large organisations
- Ability to work at pace, in a calm and focussed fashion, within a rapidly changing circular economy context and standards, with multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Understanding of how to use resource optimisation data and insight to monitor progress, and present evidence in the best way to influence key stakeholders.
- Previous line and project management experience is desirable but not essential.
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience in resource optimisation. Membership of professional association/institute (such as IEMA) is desirable.
