The new Nature Gain Team will enable the Environment Agency to protect and enhance nature and leave the nation’s natural environment in a better state than we inherited it. This means reducing negative impacts, slowing down the rate of decline and improving environmental quality everywhere. This role will be responsible for enabling the organisation to deliver the 12 commitments of eMission2030 and become a truly sustainable business, through supporting the organisation to build sustainability learning, capability, skills, leadership, understanding, credentials, and expertise.
• Recommending and implementing the optimal approach for the organisation to take on sustainability learning, including overseeing/coordinating delivery plans, as required, mitigating delivery risks and aligning to legal and organisational frameworks.
• Reviewing the organisation’s existing sustainability learning policies, processes, and procedures, and revising and developing these, as appropriate.
• Reporting and communicating progress on the organisation’s sustainability capabilities and expertise, including commissioning and utilising relevant evidence and data
• Using learning skills to review events that pose a corporate sustainability or credibility risk and partnering with stakeholders to ensure best practice is shared.
• Working with others to optimise sharing and strive for the organisation to be seen as a public sector leader in sustainability learning.
The Sustainable Business Team (SBT) is a welcoming one. We are part of the Chief Operating Officer Directorate. Our role is to act as a corporate enabler, supporting colleagues across the Environment Agency (Area/Directorate), Defra and our suppliers, to embed eMission2030: the EA’s sustainability strategy. This strategy encompasses delivery of our ambition to become Net Zero Carbon by 2030, as well as championing resource optimisation, environmental net gain and benefiting people, wildlife and communities.
The generic requirements are set out in the BSG6 job profile. The key competences are:
• Significant experience in sustainability learning, particularly of relevant training, coaching, mentoring, online learning tools/techniques, suppliers and networks and how to cultivate a culture and attitude of continuous improvement.
• Understanding of how to integrate sustainability learning within a business context, through delivery by others, sound judgement, engagement, networking, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work at pace, in a calm and focused fashion, within a rapidly changing sustainability learning context/standards, with multiple deadlines and priorities.
• Understanding of how to use sustainability learning and insight to monitor progress, ensure competence, and present evidence in the best way to influence key stakeholders.
• Previous project management and line management experience is desirable but not essential.
• Relevant degree or equivalent experience or training in sustainability learning. Membership of professional association/institute (such as IEMA) is desirable.
