Our fluvial modelling and forecasting officers provide technical advice to help build a country more resilient to climate change. As a fluvial modelling and forecasting officer you will develop and use your skills to help inform our partners how to improve flood risk management at a community or national scale. You will have basic fluvial modelling, data management or GIS experience and be committed to continuing your technical development. You will have opportunity to develop and specialise your fluvial modelling skills and begin your professional accreditation.

In this role, you will:

• Be engaged with our customers from project inception through to completion in the technical lead role. With support, you will be expected to, develop, review, audit and assure simple fluvial models
• Provide support to the others in the team, helping to advise on the most appropriate tools and techniques for hydrological and hydraulic modelling approaches, to the Environment Agency and other partner organisations.
• Be expert in managing flood and hydrological data and become the data ‘point of contact’ for your team.
• Have an interest in diversity and inclusivity, nurturing other viewpoints and making time to help develop your colleagues and yourself.
The team is part of the national Evidence and Risk (E&R) team, that provides expert analysis and advice to manage risk and improve resilience.

Our Inland teams work closely with a range of partners, providing leadership, technical expertise and specialist advice in river flooding and hydrology. The outputs of our modelling work is used in decision making for flood and coastal risk management including new and improved flood defences, land use planning and incident management.
Through experience to date you will be able to demonstrate some of the following:

• Understand the importance of evidence in informing flood risk decisions;
• Knowledge and experience in hydraulic modelling;
• Experience in data processing and GIS software packages;
• Good data management and understanding of modelling standards;
• Awareness of health, safety and wellbeing;
• Good communication skills, ability to build relationships; collaborating and agreeing expectations to deliver outcomes;
• Skills in influencing and persuading people;
• Ability to achieve results
• Experience in prioritising and managing your workload effectively;
• Good judgement and problem solving skills;

Other locations may be considered on individual merit.

Remote working/meetings is the norm at present, but in due course you would be expected to work out of one of the hub offices. Some of these positions are geographically specific, so please choose the locations you are most interested in.

The Environment Agency has an important incident management role and you will be encouraged to play your part in a way that fits around your work/life balance.
