We are looking for a Planning Advisor to join the Devon, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Sustainable Places Team. You will engage with Local Planning Authorities, developers and consultants to influence their decisions; ensuring growth and regeneration in our Area is climate resilient, provides for adaptation and delivers environmental outcomes.

Our Area has a diverse range of environmental issues and development pressures, creating opportunities for an interesting and diverse workload. We need a highly motivated person, with a passion for the environment to take on these challenges.

You will manage the Environment Agency’s interaction with the terrestrial and marine planning processes, including consultations from LPAs, Marine Management Organisation, developers and consultants. You will work closely with colleagues who deal with flood risk, contaminated land, water quality and resource, fisheries, biodiversity and permitted facilities to provide quality planning responses that allow us to effectively influences place maker’s decisions.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The Sustainable Places team are positive, knowledgeable and supportive and take pride in delivering outcomes for the environment. We lead the Environment Agency’s input into development, growth and planning policy matters. We seek to secure the best possible environmental outcomes by working closely with internal colleagues, 14 LPAs, developers, strategic partners and Defra family. We are a dispersed team based across the Bodmin and Exeter offices.
• You will be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, and or, experience of working in the UK Town & Country Planning system or environmental role.
• An understanding of the Environment Agency’s statutory role in the UK planning system, particularly relating to development management.
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to positively respond to changing and challenging priorities within set timescales.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
• Ability to synthesise information from a wide range of sources, identify and present the key facts.
• Ability to make sound decisions based on competing or complex factors.
• Ability to influence others.
• Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
• A willingness to contribute to a diverse and inclusive work culture.
The role can be based at either the Exeter or Bodmin office. There will be some travel between our offices and to our customers’ sites and offices. Travel outside of the area may be required occasionally.
