As Deputy Director for Planning, Performance and Strategy you’ll shape, spearhead and deliver business strategy and cultural transformation across the Environment Agency, ensuring that our Business Planning, Performance and Financial allocation activities provide value for money and lead to improved outcomes.

This is an exciting and highly rewarding role that sits within the Environment Agency’s new Strategy, Transformation and Assurance Directorate. Working closely with our Executive Directors Team and a range of key stakeholders, you’ll take a strategic view to ensure our planning and performance activities support the delivery of the stretching outcomes in our corporate plan. You will lead strategy development for the Environment Agency as well as leading our Business Planning and Performance functions.


You will be responsible for managing the Environment Agency’s relationship with the Defra Group Finance team, working closely with their Director and associated Defra Finance colleagues to ensure that our service expectations are clearly defined and that delivery aligns to the needs of the Environment Agency


You’ll be trusted to provide expert strategic advice on issues such as strategy development, business planning, financial allocations and performance to enable us to operate in an innovative, efficient and effective way.


You’ll lead a direct a team of approximately 60 highly skilled individuals who will support you in providing essential strategy development, business planning, performance tracking and assurance, and financial allocations services to the Environment Agency.


Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
You’ll be part of the Strategy, Planning and People Leadership Team within the Environment Agency’s new Strategy, Transformation and Assurance Directorate, working closely with the EA Board and Executive Directors team. Your direct team will play a pivotal role in ensuring a consistent EA approach to planning, performance and strategy. As a senior leader you will also contribute to our inclusivity, diverse thinking and problem solving, and help create a life enhancing place to work.
With substantial experience of both policy and operational roles you will be:

An inclusive and strategic leader with an extensive track record in strategic leadership roles

An excellent communicator and influencer, capable of translating strategy into action and shaping business culture and direction

Politically aware and able to navigate in a complex organisation

Experienced in directing a range of teams and departments through periods of change or ambiguity

Someone with a robust track record of improving business results and delivering excellent outcomes in an efficient way

Able to demonstrate experience of collaborative and partnership working

Someone with demonstrable knowledge of skills in programme and project management

Comfortable driving cultural change
