We’re looking for an Environmental Monitoring Officer to join the Sampling and Collection Team. The role includes field and office-based tasks across various disciplines including water quality sampling, ecology, hydrometric borehole dipping and fish surveys.

You will have responsibilities to;
• arrange the maintenance, service and replacement of a variety of monitoring equipment, such as, field instrumentation, sampling equipment, electric fishing equipment including boats and trailers;
• provide day to day advice and support to other monitoring staff, and lead on routine surveys to provide good quality data and information to customers;
• maintain databases for site information and equipment records, understand customer requirements and help resolve local issues;
• promote awareness of health & safety best practice, produce site and task specific risk assessments ensure you use safe working practices to comply with our policies and standards;
• promote and improve monitoring techniques/technologies such as the use of smart applications on mobile devices to schedule and collect sampling tasks
The Sampling and Collection Team collects key data and information that underpins much of the Environment Agency’s statutory reporting and regulatory responsibilities. The data and information is used by a number of internal and external customers. The team is dispersed across four sites as listed above and covers Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and the Birmingham conurbation.
You will be comfortable working near water and able to swim, and work outdoors safely in adverse weather conditions.
Also, you must be competent in the use of computers and mobile technologies.

Our successful candidate with be enthusiastic and reliable with great interpersonal and communication skills, and they will have the ability to work effectively on their own as well as being a team player.

This is a great role for a person with a passion for science and the environment. You may have a background in fish survey techniques and some knowledge of maintenance of nets, boats and other survey equipment although this is not essential. Full training will be given where appropriate.

You will need a full UK driving licence for this role.
Our staff are all expected to undertake incident roles which may be out of hours and a fee payable.
The role will be based in one of the West Midlands offices as listed above but the fieldwork covers a large geographical area. You will be provided with a vehicle for fieldwork and expected to work alone in both remote rural and urban locations.
