An exciting opportunity has arisen to help protect and enhance our valuable groundwater resource in Thames area. As part of a well-established and highly regarded team, you will apply your existing skills and experience to securing the sustainable management of our groundwater resources and quality.

The successful applicant will:

• Provide technical support to protect groundwater in Thames area through mechanisms including environmental permitting and the planning regime

• Interpret technical information including geological, hydrogeological and land quality data, conceptualise understanding in four dimensions, undertake hydrogeological risk assessments and deliver decisions to protect groundwater which are based on sound evidence and good practice

• Provide technical advice and support on a wide range of activities including waste management, effluent discharges to ground, pollution incidents and remediation schemes, water resources catchment planning and management and water resource permits

• Advise on the application of environmental legislation and guidance

• Contribute to managing the monitoring network and the data produced

• Build relationships and engage positively with a variety of internal and external customers
The team focuses on protecting and improving groundwater in an area where people and wildlife are heavily reliant on this resource. Our groundwater protection work includes the provision of expert advice to customers to support environmental permitting.

We respond to planning consultations, including high profile infrastructure and developments, and give risk-based technical and regulatory advice on land contamination sites. We also provide technical expertise and advice on a range of water resource management activities.
We are seeking someone who is experienced in groundwater protection who is versatile, self-motivated and can quickly contribute to the work of our busy team. The successful applicant will:

• Hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant geoscience discipline

• Have experience of land and groundwater contamination issues and of how groundwater resources are managed and regulated

• Be a great communicator with an ability to present clear, well-reasoned arguments based on understanding a range of environmental issues

• Manage, analyse and present a range of environmental data

• Have good IT skills and be able to use of a range of computer systems including GIS and MS Office

• Have experience of undertaking hydrogeological risk assessments and understand how to apply their outputs

• Good knowledge of relevant environmental legislation

• Be supported to undertake a role in the Environment Agency’s wider response to pollution and flooding incidents
The role will be based in our Wallingford office however remote working options may be considered. Occasional external meetings and site visits will also be required.
