We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. We work with government and others to make our environment a better place for people and wildlife.

All our work is supported by data. It informs our strategies and influences actions for ourselves and those we work with. Working in the corporate data management function, you will directly improve how we operate and how we connect people to the environment through data.

You will help implement our vision for our data through good data design, determining patterns, standards, guidance and supporting the development of roadmaps as part of an agile team. You will work with colleagues in Data and Systems and throughout the organisation delivering our business outcomes and with Defra and others to align to and deliver government data initiatives.

You will coach others, supporting our Data Modelling and Standards work and corporate projects, such as Transforming Data Management. This will deliver metadata driven data management and traceability to provide trusted and audibility for core reference data (including spatial) and to establish a data literacy framework.
The Data Management team is part of our corporate Data & Systems function, delivering corporate cross-cutting services to the Environment Agency. We provide technical services, advice and guidance to help manage our environmental, regulatory, and flooding risk and asset data through its lifecycle.

We regularly work with external organisation, partners and specialist data groups such as Ordnance Survey, Government Data Architecture Community, Government Digital Service and the Geospatial Commission.
You can demonstrate how you work with others, shared your knowledge and build joint visions and understanding to bring about transformational business change

You have a proven track record of effective implementation and delivery, balancing efficiency, pragmatism and risks. You are inquisitive, adept at identifying and delivering optimal solutions through collecting an evidence base, developing alternatives options and taking sound and timely decisions. You are forward thinker and a good communicator. You use and sustain your network to understand business need and identify emerging data opportunities.

You are a data practitioner with in-depth experience and understanding of how to draw out data requirements in relation to business processes, apply best practice in data modelling, standards, lifecycle management and auditing from ideation to archiving. You can demonstrate application of this knowledge across governance, modelling, analysis and integration use cases and the use of appropriate technologies and methods to do this..
Your capability answers will be used to determine interview selection. Please draw out your skills and experience in your responses.

The team is Bristol based, if your base preference is elsewhere you will be required to travel for some meetings and undertake some national travel when we return to conventional working conditions.

Please contact Susie MacLeay – susan.macleay@environment-agency.gov.uk if you wish to discuss the role further. No recruitment agency as present please.

Interviews are likely to take place by Video Conferencing (VC) due to currently corvid restrictions. The interview will include an assessment of your personal and your technical capabilities and skills. Please consider the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) roles in government and the definition for a Data Architect role https://www.gov.uk/guidance/data-architect when applying.
