We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. We look after land quality, promote sustainable land management and help protect and enhance wildlife habitats. We also work closely with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations.
As Environmental Crime Officer, you will work in our Area Enforcement Team to tackle a range of environmental crime, focusing on illegal waste sites, pollution incidents and enforcing environmental legislation. Using a variety of enforcement and disruption tactics you will seek to identify and stop these criminal activities to protect the environment and safeguard legitimate industry. To do this, you'll collect evidence, interview suspects, prepare case files and/or develop actions to disrupt the illegal operations across the North East Area helping create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment. You may also be involved in surveillance activities.
Sometimes we have to take tough action to achieve these aims. You may also be required to give evidence in a court of law.
The job is extremely varied, vital and at times challenging.
We are a small and dedicated Area Enforcement Team, who specialise in dealing with serious and significant environmental crime. Principally investigating waste crime but also conducting investigations into serious water pollution or other environmental offending when required. To achieve our aims, we work closely with our regulatory teams across the area and with enforcement and intelligence colleagues in other Areas and Nationally. We also routinely work with external enforcement bodies.
You’ll be an enforcement professional. Experienced in intelligence led enforcement, you’ll have planned, led and managed criminal investigations and have contributed to strategies on detection/prevention of crime.

You’ll be experienced in evidence gathering, statement writing, interviewing of suspects/witnesses, and completion of case files and have familiarity with the court system (for applying for warrants and giving evidence). You’ll have a strong attention to detail.

You’ll be able to demonstrate a detailed working knowledge of investigative legislation, including the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, Criminal Procedures and Investigation Act 1996 and Codes of Practice, Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, Data Protection Act, and Proceeds of Crime Act.
