We are looking for an enthusiastic, driven and adaptable person to join the P&SO Somerset team. Your work will be conducted in a positive environment that focuses on health, safety and wellbeing; encourages leadership and supports development.

We now live in uncertain times. We need someone to lead, develop and understand our short to long term strategic approach to fluvial flood risk management in Somerset. You will need to consider how we can adapt to climate change and become more resilient to flooding, as well as meeting our own challenge of zero net carbon. We are looking for someone who can think strategically, and be able to translate our National FCERM strategy and DEFRA 25 year plan into actions on the ground.

We can’t do this on our own and will need to work with others to achieve this. The postholder of this role will lead our involvement in developing and strengthening our relationships with external stakeholders and partners. Working together to develop and deliver a joined up integrated, sustainable, strategic approach to ensure Somerset communities become more resilient to the future risk of flooding.
The Partnership & Strategic Overview team delivers a wide range of flood risk management work. Including managing and developing our flood risk data, undertaking regulatory permitting work, and influencing planning developments.

We are also heavily involved in delivering and developing our capital programme of flood defences. Your role will be key to developing an understanding of strategic flood risk by working in partnership with stakeholders and communities
We are looking for individuals with
• Strong track record and proven experience of working with and building effective working relationships with our partners and external organisations. Preferably with experience working locally in Somerset.
• Excellent negotiation and persuasion skills and be able to achieve successful outcomes with those with differing viewpoints.
• Experience of developing strategies and evidence of strategic thinking
• Proven Leadership skills
• Programme/Project management experience.
• A sound understanding of flood and coastal risk management
• A proactive approach and fresh perspective


It would be advantageous to have knowledge of flood risk management across Somerset in particular the Levels and Moors.

You will need to demonstrate your experience of partnership working, stakeholder engagement, influencing and persuading meets the needs of this role.

The post holder will require a relevant degree or equivalent experience, be chartered, or working towards it, with a professional body ie CIWEM.
This vacancy is a permanent role in the Somerset PSO team.

As part of the Environment Agency’s incident response remit you will be expected to take up an incident response role. This may on occasion require you to have to work outside of normal working hours (overtime payable).
