We are recruiting nationally to five Geomorphology Technical Officer posts within the Environment Agency. One of the posts is an 18 months fixed term contract, based in Addington, Kent. We are looking for either a fluvial or coastal geomorphologist for this role. The post holder will have a specific focus on reviewing our Flood and Coastal Risk Management activities, and will ideally have some ecology / biodiversity knowledge as well as geomorphological knowledge.
You'll need a relevant degree with a significant geomorphology component of either fluvial or coastal geomorphology. You'll support the Geomorphology Technical Advisor on complex proposals, including delivering improvements to the ecological status of our rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters. As case work is a large part of this role, you will need to be a confident communicator, as well as having good technical geomorphology knowledge. The role has a strong practical focus, with regular site visits with colleagues to provide fluvial and coastal geomorphological advice.

You'll join a vibrant team of geomorphologists, ecologists and fisheries experts within our Area offices. You'll also be required to work with geomorphologists from our national team and other Areas, to ensure we benefit from each-others’ technical expertise and experience.
Major challenges include contributing to sustainable development and influencing our own capital schemes and operations, especially river restoration, improving fish passage, influencing renewable energy schemes, and building climate change resilience.

Qualified to at least degree level in a relevant technical discipline. You must have relevant practical experience through your degree(s), and be able to apply your technical knowledge to influence water management in ways that work with nature and natural processes.
• You'll have good influencing and communication skills, and be a problem solver with a track record of delivering results through others;
• You'll be well-organised and have the confidence to work independently, on your own initiative, and to coach / mentor others to improve their capabilities in geomorphology;
• A good understanding of the requirements of WFD, particularly the hydromorphology element, is essential
