As a member of the National Monitoring Field team, you will lead on the planning and delivery of the fisheries monitoring programme across parts of North Yorkshire and Teesside.
You will lead and coordinate the delivery of technical training and mentoring of staff on monitoring activities including the Officer in Charge (OIC) qualification to ensure a consistent and professional service. This role will instruct on the use of monitoring equipment and health, safety, and wellbeing (HSW) practices. You will lead on Site Specific Risk Assessments, and you will play a leadership role in promoting a positive HSW culture within the team and across National Field Monitoring.
As a supervisor, you will support the Team Leader and provide operational and technical leadership to the rest of the team. You’ll contribute to the delivery of all monitoring activities including the planning and collection of our environmental monitoring programme.
You are recognised as a key contact for national, local, and external customers and will have a full understanding of their requirements and actively participate in projects to ensure consistency and best practice.
You will maintain, interpret, and input into key monitoring systems including NFPD, HabScore, CLICK, MSIS, MIDAS, RouteLIMS and WIMS.
The team is dispersed and covers North Yorkshire and Teesside.
We collect field-based samples and environmental data for both local, national, and statutory requirements. The data collected provides information for teams working across the Environment Agency to serve diverse community and environmental needs.
The role requires field work, extensive rural & urban driving, and office-based responsibilities. The office location will be Darlington or York.
A full UK driving licence is essential.
You will have experience in leading fisheries surveys including various electro-fishing methods. Freshwater fish identification skills are essential. You will be proficient in ecology and water chemistry monitoring techniques.
The ability to co-ordinate the delivery of technical training and mentoring to staff on monitoring activities including the Officer in Charge qualification.
Experience of leading on HSW procedures including carrying out risk assessments of new sites and existing sites and active monitoring of others.
Ability to maintain, interpret and input into standard IT packages and key monitoring systems including NFPD, HabScore, CLICK, MSIS and WIMS.

The base location for this role will be Darlington or York. Your time will be split between field work across the team territory and office work.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
