The Executive Director of E&B leads the national team that sets the direction for our environment and business activities. You will play a pivotal role in delivering strategic environmental leadership, securing the resources and setting the priorities for 5,000 operational staff, influencing government policy and transforming our business. In this wide-ranging role, where no two days are ever the same, you will be an inspiring and passionate leader able to demonstrate your ability to oversee the delivery of multiple major projects to exacting deadlines during periods of significant change.

The Executive Director of Environment & Business is responsible for leading on the multiple relations and funding arrangements the Agency has with central government, for overseeing the many regulatory regimes – advising DEFRA, central government, and private sector organisations with inherent interests, and for leading on the Agency’s approach to sustainable business.

The role will sit on the Executive Team and is responsible for defining and, in partnership with the Executive Team, will develop and refine the organisations strategy, ensuring cohesion with the Chief Executives overall direction and vision.

You will be responsible for circa 850 FTE and have a multimillion budget.
We have driven down harmful emissions to air, land and water and transformed our influence of government policy, secured new powers and resources and played a big part in inventing our future through ambitious long-term thinking. Critical will be delivering on government ambition, tackling the climate emergency and reversing the nature crisis. We face increasingly complex, cross-functional challenges and to deliver ever more efficiently. Visible leadership, effective management, productive relationships have never been more important.
Thorough understanding of environmental issues, including pressures on the environment, risks and opportunities.
Deep executive experience as an enterprise leader within a diverse/complex organisation.
Strong evidence of balancing strategy and long-term priorities with immediate reactive concerns at executive level.
Ability to manage a diverse team of senior leaders and comfortable challenging existing ways of working.
Deep understanding of regulation, its strengths/weaknesses and modern approaches to delivery.
Deep knowledge of central/local government policies and processes – able to influence and consult on these with the most senior stakeholders in client and customer organisations, and within UK government.
A background working on behalf of complex organisations, using breadth of commercial and financial acumen to secure significant grants or other funding opportunities.
Exceptional communication and influencing skills. The role will negotiate, mediate and consult with central and local government, ensuring the agency is positioned as the UK expert in environmental regulations and policy.
The role will include travel to London and other locations across England.

Assessments will take place week commencing 25th July 2022.
