You’ll play a vital role in ensuring effective regulation of the waste industry to protect people, communities and the environment and promote sustainable growth. You’ll provide support to help the Environment Agency manage environmental and flood incidents.

Our Senior Environment Officers provide technical leadership and coaching to our teams of waste regulators across Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. We’re growing our technical resilience due to changes in the charges our customers pay, resulting in increasing expectations of the regulatory, advisory and auditing services that we provide.

You will be adept at influencing change in behaviours of directors of businesses in the waste management industry to ensure those businesses achieve compliance with their environmental permits. You will understand what motivates businesses to be sustainable and make the right choices to protect people and the environment. You’ll also be astute – making the judgement where businesses cannot or will not adapt and you’ll be prepared to use our range of regulatory tools and incentives to achieve compliance.

You will apply your commercial skills to ensure that our resources are spent based on the sources of our income and that charges are properly billed and debt recovered.
We believe that working for the Environment Agency should be life enhancing. In doing so, we encourage people to work flexibly and we engender a community where people can be themselves and develop their careers to reach their full potential. You will be supported by our group of technical leaders across our regulated industry teams. You will be based in one of our waste teams, backed by a local line manager.
You will have an understanding of environmental regulation of industry either through working for a regulated industry or as a regulator. You will be a graduate in an appropriate discipline or have equivalent vocational and academic experience. You will be: a great communicator, customer focussed, able to coach others and develop yourself, manage your time well and build rapport with a wide variety of people.

Membership of a relevant professional organisation is not essential but will be an advantage. Our regulatory staff are members of the: Chartered Institution of Wastes Management; Chartered Institute of Environmental Health; Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment; Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.
Closing Date: 22nd April 2019 at 23:55 hours

The Senior Environment Officer role will require you to travel to various field locations across the South East. We are a civil contingencies act responder, so we ensure that everyone is able to find a way to support our response to serious environmental and flood incidents.

Your role qualifies for a non-contributory car and you will need a full driver’s licence. For further details please contact Neda Kayyali, Waste Team Leader on 02030257193 or at neda.kayyali@environment-agency.gov.uk. This is a re-advertisement. Previous applicants need not re-apply.
