We’re looking for a Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) Officer to join our asset performance team. You will be responsible for assessing and recording the condition of the flood defences on the tidal River Thames in London.

You will work with riverside land owners to make sure they comply with planning conditions and environmental permits and you will work with others to take enforcement action when owners do not fulfil their legal obligations. You will engage with the public to communicate flood risk and contribute to the delivery of work to maintain and improve London’s flood defences. You will have the opportunity to join our standby teams who respond to incidents caused by tidal flooding.

This role is vital to ensure that London’s tidal Thames flood defences continue to perform now and in the future. It is a great opportunity for you to work in the asset management and civil engineering sector and to help the Environment Agency protect London and the Thames Estuary from tidal flooding.
The tidal Thames asset performance team manage over 3,000 flood defences that, together with the Thames Barrier, protect London from tidal flooding. Our defences are located on the banks of the Thames and its tributaries from Rainham and Erith to Teddington Lock.
We carry out flood defence inspection, maintenance, repair and improvement works and use permissive powers to ensure riverside landowners look after the flood defences on their property.
We are looking for someone with sufficient knowledge to enable them to assess the condition of flood defences in accordance with national guidance and standards.
You will be qualified to degree standard (or equivalent) in a civil engineering discipline, or have sufficient experience to work at an equivalent level. You will have experience of working as part of a team as well as using your initiative when making decisions. You will have strong communication skills to enable positive conversations with flood defence owners to ensure they maintain their defences and protect them from damage.
You must be able to work safely and productively on your own and be able to assess the risks posed by working in remote and potentially hazardous environments. You will also need to be able to use IT including mobile technology.
