We are recruiting a Scientist to assess information on the environmental effects, fate and exposure of chemicals in a hazard and risk assessment context. Working closely with senior colleagues and staff at the Health and Safety Executive, you will:

• Evaluate technical data in chemical dossiers and test reports prepared by companies or other regulatory authorities to ensure that they have followed relevant procedures and guidance;
• Produce comments if you think changes need to be made, and propose alternative approaches where necessary; and
• Interpret and summarise technical data to support the drafting of UK regulatory dossiers on specific substances
The Chemicals Assessment Unit supports the UK Competent Authority for the REACH and CLP Regulations, and also Defra as part of the UK’s other international chemical obligations. We provide dedicated technical expertise to assess the environmental hazards and risks of industrial and consumer chemicals (anything from soap fragrances to flame retardants), and propose risk management actions. We work with UK Government, European and global partners (including the chemical industry and other regulators).
You will need to pay attention to detail, enjoy analysing complex scientific and numerical data for presentation to others, and be confident in working with standard guidance. You will need to be educated to degree level in environmental sciences, chemistry or other appropriate scientific disciplines such as biology.

The role requires excellent writing skills, good time management and organisational ability to ensure all deadlines are met. Practical knowledge of environmental fate and/or ecotoxicology testing is ideal but you will otherwise have an awareness of how we can assess chemical behaviour and interactions with organisms in the environment.
Closing Date: 24th June 2018 at 23:55 hours

This is a permanent role. It is office-based and can be located in Wallingford or York. The successful applicant may sometimes have to travel for meetings across the UK.

For more information please contact Steve Dungey (Tel: 02030259764, Email: steve.dungey@environment-agency.gov.uk)

Interviews will be held w.c. 16 or 23 July 2018.
