To lead the Economics and Social Science team, developing the use of economics and social science across the organisation, and helping to shape regulatory decision-making and Environment Agency submissions to spending reviews. Providing the evidence to help underpin investment planning decisions, input to spending reviews, flood risk investment, development of natural capital, river basin planning, better regulation and regulatory decisions. The post holder will work with senior leadership of the organisation including senior civil servants in Defra, the government professions, Her Majesty’s Treasury and economic regulators.
The team is made up of 13 economists and social scientists, reporting into the vacant post and is part of the Evidence Directorate. The Environment Agency’s work is managed via four main business areas: Flood Management; Water, Land & Biodiversity; Regulated Industry and cross-cutting work. The staff in the team split their time between each of these areas. The team also works with Defra economists and social scientists and other teams across the Agency.
Suitable Economics qualification, educated to degree level or equivalent.
Experience of leading and influencing government and other expert / technical organisations
Experience of leading and managing multi disciplinary teams
Experience in evaluating risks and potential mitigation options
Experience in developing and influencing strategic outcomes with a range of stakeholders
Experience of communicating effectively within a large and complex organisation
Experience of delegating management activities through senior direct reports
