This is a diverse and interesting role in a busy team that will suit a proactive individual. The technical advisor will lead on projects and work collaboratively to ensure delivery of flood risk outcomes. This could be working with key partners such as the lead local flood authorities to ensure we continue to improve flood risk knowledge and working with communities to raise awareness and implement local measures.
The new Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy sets 3 long term ambitions to address the challenge of climate change. The technical advisor will help us to make National policy into local delivery options. This will involve keeping up to date with legislation, evidence and policy and working with colleagues to change ways of working that reflect these developments.
You will be part of the Luton, Herts and Essex team where you will show leadership and help develop skills and capabilities in the team.
Partnership & Strategic Overview teams are responsible for identifying flood risk management schemes and providing flood risk advice, whether for planning applications or flood risk management projects. We work closely with partners to achieve flood risk outcomes. Good relationships with stakeholders and customers is essential to maintain robust partnerships and influence environmental outcomes. We are a supportive and inclusive team, with learning and development actively encouraged.
You will be passionate about the environment and confident to use your knowledge and initiative to achieve sustainable outcomes in flood risk management. You will have experience of leadership and successful delivery of projects.
You’ll be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or science discipline. Energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn with excellent communication skills are important.
You’ll have real desire to build relationships to achieve our goal of protecting people and property from flooding.
It will be beneficial to have a good understanding of flooding and the Environment Agency’s role in managing flood risk.

Knowledge and/or experience of the some / all of the following are desirable:
• development and planning;
• flood legislation;
• river processes, hydrology and the management of flood risk;
• working with partners and customers to achieve outcomes;
• engineering principles;
• programming and project management.
