As a Category 1 emergency responder, under the Civil Contingencies Act, we need to be prepared for many types of environmental and societal emergencies such as flooding or significant pollution. We work alongside other agencies to prevent harm to people and the environment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced emergency planner who wants to make a lasting difference by leading our preparedness for what’s ahead.
You'll provide leadership on our approach to emergency planning and preparation for the whole organisation to follow.

You’ll work closely with our 14 Operational Area Incident teams from across the country to ensure our national work aligns with their local delivery. You’ll develop new initiatives with them and bring local issues to a national platform.

Working nationally with other Category 1 responders, Government bodies, wider organisations and voluntary sector, You'll find ways to improve our work together to ensure our response on the ground is effective.
The Incident Planning team take risks identified in the National Security Risk Register and turn them into scalable and usable plans for the organisation to follow. They scan the horizon to look for impending risks, check our preparations and ensure the organisation is ready to respond.

The team is made up of a group of emergency planning experts dispersed across England, some of whom you’ll line manage.
You will be able to demonstrate the following:

• Practical experience of planning for or responding to emergencies, corporate risks or business continuity incidents.
• Established line management skills, experienced in motivating, and supporting team members
• The ability to network and develop strong links and plans with colleagues and external partners;
• A proven ability to work collaboratively and deliver results through others outside of your direct control;
• Strong communication skills adaptable to a wide variety of audiences and styles;
• Experience in prioritising and managing your workload effectively, particularly when faced with multiple organisational asks;
• Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills;
• A curious, inclusive, and open mindset;
The role will require some travel, as the team and our partners are spread across England. However, most of your time will be spent in your nearest local office or at home, as the Environment Agency has adopted hybrid working arrangements.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may require working outside of office hours and at the weekend, which attracts an additional payment and overtime. Flexible working arrangements are in place to support you in your role and full training will be provided.

To discuss any aspect of the role please contact Katharine Smith, Incident Planning Manager, on 07766443527 or email Katharine.smith@environment-agency.gov.uk
