An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Fisheries Technical Officer to join our busy Fisheries Team in Hertfordshire North London. You will join a small team involved in river habitat and fisheries improvement schemes and a variety of partnership projects aimed at delivering Water Framework Directive (WFD) & other environmental outcomes aimed at enhancing fisheries and biodiversity within HNL area.
You will provide expert fisheries technical input to internal and external customers, on a range of issues requiring a balance between office based and operational field work. These include fisheries incident management, fish passage and habitat improvements, eel regulations, fish movement permitting, Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) schemes and maintenance, planning applications, flood risk activity permits, fisheries management, non-native fish investigations.
The role will also require you to liase closely with fishery owners, angling bodies and anglers in an advisory and regulatory capacity including the Angling Trust, Local Authorities and contractors.
A good working knowledge of fish species, ecology, fish health and fisheries management will be needed with good IT and communication skills.
The role will require you to support environmental incident response requiring some out of hours and unsocial hours working responding to fish kills.
You'll join a friendly, passionate and high performing team working across an area with a mix of rural and urban river catchment habitats. You will take a lead for a designated catchment area, acting as point of contact within the team for customer contact and the operational work in your patch
You will work closely with colleagues in Biodiversity and Sampling & collection teams assisting fish monitoring, fisheries incidents and other related operational work.
We are seeking a person with field and office-based experience and a proven ability of delivering fisheries and/or conservation work applicable to the role.
You'll have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline as well as being able to demonstrate the following:
Experience in fisheries regulation, management, sampling and data handling.
A good understanding of fisheries management & fish ecology, as well as its practical implications for the work the Environment Agency does and that of its external partners.
Excellent positive communications, influencing and persuasion skills
Project Management experience
Strong organisational skills and ability to work independently planning and delivering own workload. Able to work as part of a team including willingness to work unsocial hours and respond to out of hours incidents.
Full UK driving licence required
