Senior Leadership

This is a role for an executive with a flair for fostering an environment where people thrive. With responsibility for 300-500 colleagues, you’ll work together to create a better place for thousands of people and all manner of wildlife. It’s as much a personal mission as it is a professional vocation.

You will be driving forward the Environment Agency and Defra strategies in your area. You’ll quickly grasp the local environmental, political, technical and commercial issues and work with other Area Directors and senior leaders to identify opportunities to deliver better outcomes.

With a multi-million-pound budget, this is no small task. But your vision and visible leadership will develop your teams’ capabilities and empower them to improve the world around them.

Equally, you’ll manage our reputation with local and national media; influencing initiatives that contribute to our long-term aims of reducing flood risk, improving all aspects of the natural environment and supporting economic growth for the benefit of our local communities. You’ll also manage any incidents, often collaborating directly with other emergency services, locally elected representatives and Government Ministers.
Representing one of our key areas across England which vary in size and shape, you will have a dedicated team of experts to support you. You will be key in contributing to the strategic leadership of the whole Environment Agency. All executive managers in the Environment Agency work together to lead and deliver strategic management of the business, especially during floods and other environmental incidents. This requires refined cross-team networking and delivery.
First and foremost, you’ll be an enthusiastic person who’s ready for this challenge; eager to drive innovative strategies and deliver positive outcomes for the environment we all live in. You could have a background in commercial or governmental sectors but more important is your experience of nurturing and leading large, complex divisions or organisations. An astute political operator, you’ll be as adept at crisis management as you are at embedding long-term change. You’ll also bring a reputation for establishing budgets and winning support for multi-million-pound investments. It would be an advantage if you hold, or are working towards, full membership of a relevant professional body (or equivalent).
