In Hertfordshire and North London Area we manage a variety of aquifers including the Chalk Aquifer, crucial to provide drinking water as well as base flow to our beautiful Chalk Rivers. You’ll contribute to protecting the groundwater quality by bringing back contaminated land into beneficial use, tackling tough issues like increased development and a legacy of land contamination, and ensuring groundwater is protected in the many significant infrastructural projects that will be active in our Area. You will be working with other teams and experts internally and local authorities and developers externally.
The Groundwater and Land Quality Team is a multifunctional team focused on protecting our groundwater resources, improving water quality and dealing with the legacy of land contamination. We provide technical advice support the Environment Agency decision making. We are involved in many areas of work such as brownfield redevelopment and environmental permit regulation.
We are seeking a numerate individual with a strong scientific background in environment science, hydrogeology and/or chemistry. You'll have several years of experience working unsupervised on land and groundwater affected by contamination issues. Ideally you are qualified to MSc level, and working towards Chartership.
You use your initiative to deliver successful outcomes for the environment. You will make technical decisions using well-developed time management, data management, IT and interpersonal skills. Ideally you are familiar using quantitative risk assessment tools, e.g. Consim, Landsim and RTM.

The role will be located at the Environment Agency’s Alchemy office located in Welwyn Garden City that benefits from limited parking. Occasional travel to other offices and sites may be required. As such a full UK driving licence is desirable but not essential.
