We are looking for a motivated and talented Fisheries Technical Officer to join the West Midlands Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology (FBG) Team to cover the areas of Shropshire and Herefordshire.

You will be involved in a range of duties focusing on providing quality technical advice to a variety of customers; this will cover work such as fish passage improvements, flood risk management schemes and maintenance, planning applications, Water resource permits, land drainage consents and fisheries management advice.

You will also get involved in river habitat improvement schemes and a variety of partnership projects aimed at delivering outcomes to improve fish stocks and create a better environment for wildlife and people.

You will be responsible for supporting and leading on fisheries projects, provide technical support toward achieving multiple benefits for fisheries through other internal of collaborative external projects with partners such as rivers trusts
Incident response is a priority for us, and you will be expected to take part in incident response activities within Fisheries, and across the wider business.

We are looking for a candidate that is comfortable working under the pressure of incident response, works flexibly in a team and can provide out of hours and weekend standby support.
You will be part of a friendly, and passionate team who cover a large part of West Midlands Area.

The team delivers a range of WFD improvement projects which may require your advice and support.

The team also supports other internal and external partners to enhance the rivers, estuaries and wetlands, focusing on delivering our Water Framework Directive priorities to create sustainable habitat and improved ecology.

We are seeking a new team member with good working knowledge of freshwater ecology and fisheries management processes.
You must have a proven track record for field work and an equal measure of office experience, have worked to priority deadlines and has influenced others in delivering, fisheries and conservation work.
You will understand we have a statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop fisheries in the area and you will be able to show solid knowledge and understanding of the type of those fisheries and key drivers to their regulation.

You may have a relevant degree, or be able to demonstrate equivalent learning and experience.
You will have achieved (or be working towards) full membership of a relevant professional body.


We are looking for a proven track record as an influencer and collaborator, building network of partners and customers, developing rapport, identifying opportunities and guiding planning to achieve multiple benefits.
The team is dispersed over 4 Counties and 3 offices. Preferably the post will be based in Shrewsbury.

As a Category 1 Responder for environmental incidents our officers are expected to undertake an incident role. This may involve out of hours work or being on a stand-by rota for which an extra payment is available.

A car is provided for use as required.

A full UK driving licence is essential and you must be prepared to undertake training for the trailer endorsement (B+E).

This is a full time post but other working patterns may be considered.
