This is an exciting role in the Environment Agency’s Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology Team in Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire.
You will be expected to work across all three disciplines, providing support in Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology. An essential part of the role is to support the wider team, providing administrative and data management support. The role will provide an opportunity to develop your technical knowledge.
You will be required to work alone and alongside experienced officers to assist in providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and partners on a diverse range of topics. These include commenting on and influencing permits, planning applications and flood risk management maintenance programmes
There will be opportunities to learn new skills and get involved in a range of work in and out of the office. As your technical ability develops, you will be expected to have a greater role on aspects of the team’s work. You’ll be required to use a risk-based approach to protect and improve the water environment.
There will be opportunities to work with external partners and other Environment Agency teams delivering projects that provide a wide range of environmental benefits from habitat creation to natural flood management.
You will join a dedicated team of fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology experts within Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire. The team use their expertise to deliver functional, corporate and statutory duties. We focus on delivering Water Framework Directive outcomes through our operational and regulatory activities, as well as partnership working to improve the environment for people and wildlife. We work hard to create a better place by protecting and enhancing our diverse habitats and species.
Experience of working in fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology and/or a degree in a relevant discipline is necessary. You will be required to demonstrate your technical knowledge at interview.
Excellent communication skills are essential. You will work with a diverse range of people and need to communicate a range of technical and non-technical messages in a clear manner.
Through work experience or studies you should be able to demonstrate the following:
• A technical understanding of fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology
• Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers
• Delivery of work by planning, tracking, gathering and maintaining data/information
• Ability to use own initiative
• Work as part of a team to make decisions and achieve planned outcomes
• Good organisational skills and competent IT skills, including an ability to use Geographic Information Systems
• An awareness of environmental legislation
• Experience of scientific fieldwork

This post will require some working across Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire, including site visits and fieldwork. A full driving licence is therefore preferable for this role.
