We work to ensure homes and business are better protected and communities are better prepared for floods. You will support our ambitions by ensuring that our flood risk engagement with partners and local communities in the Hertfordshire and North London area is well coordinated and effective. Based in the Flood Resilience team, you will work closely with colleagues across wider teams and departments as you lead on the development of the local engagement plan for flood and coastal risk management activities, including community resilience projects and our programmes to build and maintain our flood defences.

You will use your experience to:
- build and sustain effective relationships with community stakeholders and internal and external partners;
- identify and capitalise on opportunities to engage with communities, and develop effective engagement plans to raise awareness of flood risk and increase uptake of resilience measures;
- help improve ways of working for our community and stakeholder engagement activities;
- act as a coach and mentor to develop communications and engagement skills in others;
- demonstrate leadership and provide technical guidance in supporting the Team Leader to plan, prioritise and manage the team’s workload;
- coordinate engagement, as directed, during and after flood incidents.
Our Flood Resilience team ensures we are resilient and ready for incidents by:
- working with communities at risk from flooding, providing advice on what to do before, during and after flooding;
- working with our professional partners to ensure we all pull together for the best response;
- maintaining our flood warning systems;
- training and supporting our incident staff.
You will be a highly organised, enthusiastic and self-motivated individual. You will be people focused and must be experienced in engaging with communities and professional partners. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to successfully deliver complex or difficult messages to a variety of audiences.

You will be confident working within a team environment and able to develop networks with colleagues locally and nationally. Your influencing skills will enable you to collaborate successfully with others and secure positive outcomes through our engagement. Your ability to be adaptable and deliver work within tight timescales will be an advantage because sometimes the work must be reactive when flooding occurs.

It will be beneficial to have a good understanding of flooding and the Environment Agency’s Role in managing flood risk.
Travel to external meetings and other Environment Agency locations may be required. You must be prepared to attend occasional community engagement events that may be held on evenings or at weekends.

The Environment Agency is a Category 1 responder. You will be expected to participate in our response to incidents which may require out of hours working. There are a wide variety of incident roles to match your skills, experience and personal circumstances. Full training and support will be provided.

We offer an extensive range of employee benefits, a generous annual leave entitlement and support flexible working arrangements.

Interviews will be scheduled from week commencing 21 October 2019.
