Make a real difference in a fulfilling technical leadership role! Join us to influence and inspire colleagues, partners and customers to protect and restore the environment for people and wildlife in the West Midlands. We need you to build rapport and influence our major stakeholders strategically (water companies, nationally significant infrastructure projects, in-house capital project programmes, local authorities, land owners and developers). Your advice and expert technical contribution to planning, permitting, partnering and project delivery and enforcement of environmental and fisheries legislation will achieve and maintain good ecological status in water bodies and sustainable fish populations, including eel and salmon.
You will help set our priorities and interpret complex technical principles, procedures, policy and byelaws to develop best practice and consistency with your national and cross-functional network in order to achieve multiple objectives.
You will also support the management of our team, maintain your expertise and develop colleagues’ technical competency, through coaching and personal development planning. We participate in major incident response and engage with business, partners and angling customers to promote and support the socio/economic benefits of fishing.
We’re a friendly, experienced and passionate team based across the West Midlands who integrate fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology expertise, support access to sustainable angling opportunities and influence colleagues, partners and customers to protect and restore natural river catchments for wildlife and people. We also work closely with colleagues across our businesses in Environment & Business and Flood & Coastal Risk Management to protect and restore the environment and manage the impact of major incidents.
The ideal candidate will show excellent leadership skills, the ability to inspire, motivate and coach people and great networking, influencing and communication skills.
They should;
• have a broad knowledge of the impacts and opportunities of disciplines we influence, including regulation, engineering, project management, town and country planning and agriculture
• demonstrate expertise in river, lake and fish ecology, habitat and river dynamics and river restoration.
• understand environmental legislation and policy, with experience regulating and enforcing these and presenting evidence as an expert witness
• be an excellent communicator, influencer, coach and adviser, team worker, technical lead to support and develop our team capability
• demonstrate commitment to a strong health, safety and wellbeing culture
• hold credentials and significant experience to support your influence and credibility, such as relevant first degree in a fish ecology or other relevant discipline, higher degrees and membership of relevant professional institutes.
The right to work in the UK and ability to drive, cross uneven terrain and swim are essential. The work involves travel to remote sites in or near water, to other offices to collaborate via meetings and teleconference.
You will be expected to support the EA’s response to environmental and flood incidents.
