We’re looking for an Environmental Monitoring Officer to help us meet our Water Framework Directive and locally driven sampling requirements. You will spend most of your time outdoors collecting environmental samples and will also provide input to the scheduling of work via the CLICK scheduling tool. You'll take a wide range of samples including river water quality, effluents, bathing water, invertebrates, diatoms, groundwater boreholes and rain gauges. You will work towards qualifying as Officer In Charge for electric fishing surveys. You will also be involved in boat work sampling. Experience of fieldwork and biosecurity best practice is essential.
The work can be physically demanding as it requires lifting and carrying samples and entering rivers to take ecology samples. You will sample in all weathers, all year round. You will be working on your own for the majority of the time, so you’ll need to be self-motivated and organised. You will be provided with an Environment Agency badged vehicle so a valid full driving licence is required.
The Sampling and Collection Team are a field based team who collect a wide range of good quality environmental data to support the Environment Agency’s vital role in environmental regulation and in our aim to achieve Water Framework Directive good ecological status for all our water bodies.
Relevant fieldwork experience in an appropriate range of environmental monitoring techniques is essential, demonstrating a proven ability to work safely, effectively and enthusiastically outdoors in all weathers, alone and as part of a team. This includes experience of boatwork and electric fishing.

You must be able to work confidently in and around water and be able to swim.

Attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and management is essential as you will provide input to the scheduling and organisation of workload for the team.
