If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment for generations to come, tackling issues of national importance across a huge variety of disciplines. We’re based in over 14 areas across England, and our responsibilities span major industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation.
Such a broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams and exceptional leadership: together, we’ll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.
You’ll join our dedicated National Permitting Service, who protect the environment by assessing applications for environmental permits and licenses. Working with a team of permitting officers, you’ll assess your own caseload of applications, work on environmental permitting legislation and make decisions on applications based on technical grounds.

It's highly varied, challenging work that plays a key role in creating a cleaner, greener and safer environment. On top of your assessment and legislation duties, you’ll also develop relationships with a range of partners and support other key functions including flooding and environmental response.
The Permitting Teams’ primary role is to protect the environment and support sustainable economic growth through determining applications for environmental permits/licences.

You will work with a team of permitting officers, based at one of our offices in the above locations with the option to work flexibly.
You will work in one of our permitting regimes; Waste, Water Quality, Water Resources or Mobile Plant.
You should have strong organisational and communication skills along with good attention to detail and sound judgement. Solid IT skills including the use of digital tools is also important, and you should be comfortable making risk-based decisions.

We’re also looking for candidates with a genuine passion for the environment and who are keen to protect it by regulating damaging activities. Ideally, you’ll also have some relevant work experience, but this isn’t essential.
You’ll benefit from a culture that embraces difference and includes everyone, where you’ll feel supported and trusted to do the right thing. We’ll invest in you and allow you to grow and shape your career. What’s more, you’ll have access to our great benefits package, including generous annual leave, paid membership of an institute, an excellent pension, flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to be part of a variety of staff networks
If, at any stage, you have questions or problems, please contact the recruitment team on 0845 241 5350 or email ea_recruitment@gov.sscl.com
