This role is an exciting opportunity for a skilled communicator and science translator to help increase the reach and impact of the work of the Chief Scientist’s Group.
You will join the Research Hub, a friendly, fun and busy team at the heart of the Chief Scientist’s Group. We help the Group deliver the research and evidence the Environment Agency needs to fulfil its duties. Effective science communication is crucial in our work.
In this role you will:
• Generate high quality, engaging content to translate our science and share it with internal and external audiences across a range of media, including social media
• Maintain a forward look of communication products, linking with others to maximise their impact
• Work closely with our research scientists to understand, translate and communicate their work in a way that brings it to life and effectively reaches and engages non-specialists
• Develop strategic relationships with communications and engagement specialists across the Environment Agency and beyond, bringing in learning and experience
• Innovate in the way we communicate our science to engage others
• Evaluate the effectiveness of our communication activities
• Develop materials to promote the identity of the Chief Scientist’s Group
The Research Hub is a friendly, busy team at the heart of the Chief Scientist’s Group.
Led by Doug Wilson, Chief Scientist, the Group leads on science, research, analysis and evaluation for the Environment Agency. Our teams identify the evidence needed to support the business of the Environment Agency. We identify gaps and emerging trends, source the evidence, and translate and communicate it in a compelling way to provide confidence in decisions the organisation takes.
You will:
• Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to produce high quality content that is clear and engaging for a variety of audiences using a range of media, including social media
• Have a science degree or relevant scientific background
• Enjoy writing and be able to produce and edit written content with ease and at pace
• Have experience of effective science translation and engagement
• Be good at building relationships and have experience of working with internal or external partners to meet shared goals
• Be well organised, able to prioritise and manage a wide-ranging workload
• Be a good team player, willing to work collaboratively and help others to achieve team goals. You will also be able to work independently.
• Have IT skills required to work effectively and remotely.
The Research Hub is a dispersed team with a core in Bristol. Remote working is not a barrier but you will need to be prepared to travel for face to face team meetings, performance reviews and other ad-hoc meetings, when these become possible.
You will be encouraged to develop yourself both on the job and through off the job activities such as an incident management role or a role in a professional network .
