We are the Environment Agency. We create better places for people, wildlife and the environment. We improve and protect the quality of our air, land and water by tackling pollution. We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations and believe a healthy and diverse environment enhances people’s lives and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth.
This is an exciting opportunity within the Environment Agency’s Air Quality Modelling and Assessment Unit (AQMAU). As a senior technical advisor you will use your scientific knowledge and professional judgement to provide technical leadership on air dispersion and/or noise modelling.
You will take the lead for any of a number of priority work areas, influencing and informing policy and decision makers. You will input to the development of new processes and tools, collaborating with colleagues across the organisation to support policy and research in air quality and noise.
Alongside this you will work closely with other members of the AQMAU team, providing technical direction and helping to support development across the team.
You’ll be a part of the Air Quality Modelling and Assessment Unit (AQMAU). The team provides regulatory advice to support permitting, compliance and major incidents, helping to protect people and wildlife from regulated emissions. You’ll be part of a team sharing skills and experience to deliver the best outcomes for the environment. The work we do impacts on permitting decisions and how a site can legally operate.
You will have
• A minimum of degree level or equivalent in a science or engineering discipline.
• Significant air quality and/or noise modelling experience gained through regulatory, consultancy or industry roles.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and accessible way.
• Strong interpersonal and team-working skills and the ability to coach colleagues.

You will be capable of understanding complex information and using it to solve problems; and you will be skilled at using it to inform organisational approaches.
You’ll also need the credibility to engage at a senior technical level with both internal and external colleagues and have demonstrable experience of doing so.
We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with a background in any of the following:
• Chemistry / chemical engineering
• Ecology / agriculture

Membership/ Chartership with a relevant professional organisation is desirable.
