An exciting opportunity for you as an emerging or established professional to help protect and enhance our valuable groundwater resource in Thames Area. As part of a supportive, well-established and highly regarded team you will work to secure the sustainable management of our groundwater.

You will:

• Provide technical support to protect groundwater through mechanisms including environmental permitting and the planning regime
• Interpret technical information including geological, hydrogeological and land quality data, conceptualise your understanding in four dimensions, undertake hydrogeological risk assessments and deliver decisions to protect groundwater based on sound evidence and good practice
• Provide technical advice and support on a wide range of activities including waste management, effluent discharges to ground, pollution incidents and remediation schemes, water resources catchment planning and management, and water resource permits
• Contribute to the management of our monitoring network and the data it produces
• Build relationships and engage positively with a variety of customers both internal and external.
The Groundwater Resources and Contaminated Land Team focuses on protecting and improving groundwater. Our work includes providing expert advice to internal and external customers to support environmental permitting across a wide range of activities. We respond to planning consultations, including high profile infrastructure developments and give risk-based technical and regulatory advice on land contamination sites. We also provide technical advice on a range of water resource management activities including WFD, abstraction management, and permitting.
With experience in groundwater protection you will be versatile, self-motivated and able to quickly contribute to the work of our busy team.

You will:

• Hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant geoscience discipline
• Have experience of land and groundwater contamination issues and groundwater resources management and regulation
• Be a great communicator with an ability to present clear, well-reasoned arguments based on your understanding of a range of environmental issues
• Manage, analyse and present a range of environmental data
• Have good IT skills and be able to use of a range of computer systems including GIS and MS Office.
• Have experience of undertaking hydrogeological risk assessments and understand how to apply their outputs
• Demonstrate a good knowledge of relevant environmental legislation.
• Be supported to undertake a role to support the Environment Agency’s wider response to pollution and flooding incidents.
You will be based in our Wallingford office in Oxfordshire although you will also need to be able to travel to our other area office in Reading. Flexible working arrangements will also be considered.

Depending on the outcome of the selection process, we may offer posts as development grade 3 roles. This provides an additional 12 month structured training programme to develop the required capabilities before progression to a grade 4 technical officer.
