We are looking for an exceptionally talented Fisheries Technical Officer to join the Fisheries Team in Hertfordshire, North London area.
The role is to help maintain, improve and develop our area fisheries in a busy and demanding mixed urban and rural environment. We advise a wide range of internal teams and external customers to uphold fisheries and environmental legislation (such as Environmental Permitting Regulations, Water Framework Directive and Eel Regulations), investigate and remediate incidents which put fish and the environment at risk and provide fisheries technical advice on permits regulating customer activities We work with partners in water companies, local authorities and developers, Natural England, the angling community and colleagues managing environmental and flood risk, to support activities and projects which achieve our mutual objectives.

We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated professionals, with excellent technical and inter-personal skills and a proven track record of managing competing workloads. You will work collaboratively with others both within the team and across the business to provide top quality fisheries advice and guidance. The role is full of variety and will require significant office based and frequent field based activity.
You’ll join our passionate and dedicated fisheries team within Fisheries Biodiversity & Geomorphology based at Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

The team has strong focus on delivering Water Framework Directive (WFD) outcomes and targets of the 25 year Environment Plan through our operational and regulatory activities and fisheries improvement projects. We have a strong customer focus on partnership working with local angling groups issuing fisheries management advice and develop opportunities to improve the fisheries environment.
A degree in a relevant fisheries, or related discipline and technical expertise in fisheries and environmental legislation, fisheries species management regulatory activities.

Strong communication, collaboration and influencing skills, organisational & time management skills , adaptability, resilience and initiative are key requirements.

Experience of project management, partnership collaboration and or habitat management is advantageous.

Driving in the UK, walking over rough ground during field visits and swimming competence for work in or near water are essential occupational requirements.

Field skills including working in rivers and lakes, fish species monitoring & identification, managing fish stocks using electric fishing, seine netting, boat handling and off-road driving would be an advantage.

Working knowledge of the Herts, North London area catchments and fisheries resource would be an advantage.
The role requires that you have a full driving licence.
Ability to support environmental incident response, including some out of hours and unsocial hours working including weekends/evenings.
