Our Industrial Placements run for 54 weeks starting in July-August 2021. Giving you time to gain valuable experience whilst complementing your studies and personal/professional growth.

Geomatics is the centre of expertise for remote sensing/GIS data analysis within the Environment Agency. Our geospatial products help support a wide range of applications across the Environment Agency/partners organisations including, flood modelling, habitat mapping, asset management, and environmental/urban planning. We also support during incidents by surveying/monitoring events such as floods/environmental disasters.

During the placement you will have the opportunity to work with specialists delivering high quality spatial data products.

Daily tasks may include:

• Processing data captured using our state of the art airborne LIDAR and digital aerial camera systems to agreed accuracy specifications.
• Production of high quality Digital Surface Models and classification of surface objects to create Digital Terrain Models.
• Ortho-rectification of colour/near-infrared airborne imagery to create seamless photo mosaics.
• Generation of QC reports and archiving of data to ensure availability for future use.
• Using GIS and remote sensing software to undertake complex spatial analysis of elevation and other spectral datasets.
The Environment Agency works across England giving you the opportunity to work both locally and nationally.

You will work with and learn from experienced members of your appointed team who will coach and mentor you throughout the year to support you to reach your potential.
We are looking for individuals with a well-developed sense of spatial awareness who are committed to a career in geomatics and/or the environmental sector. Ideally you will be studying or have recently studied a Geomatics/GIS/Remote Sensing/Geography related degree.
You will have completed a minimum of two years of your degree course but will not have graduated before summer 2022.
We are looking for applicants with some of the following skills:
- A passion for the environment and wanting to create a better place.
- Keen interest in GIS and remote sensing – Experience in using ESRI GIS software would be advantageous.
- Basic theoretical knowledge of LIDAR systems or other remote sensing platforms would be beneficial but is not required
- High level computer literacy
- Analytical and problem solving skills
- Excellent communication
- Team working skills
- Able to take initiative
- Manage own workload
