We are looking for a dynamic and technically gifted scientist to lead some of our research relating to on-shore oil and gas (OOG). You should have specialist knowledge of the challenges posed by the oil and gas industries in relation to air quality and be able to provide sound scientific advice to specialist and non-specialist audiences. The role demands strong numerical and interpersonal skills with extensive experience in air quality science but also someone willing to use their expertise across discipline boundaries. The role underpins the work being undertaken by the EA to understand and assess the potential risks from OOG activity. The EA work in this area covers projects and collaborations nationally and internationally and across government, academia and industry to develop the underpinning evidence required by the EA, Defra and BEIS. You will have the scientific authority to represent the Agency’s position to a range of audiences including government officials, scientific meetings, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders. The role requires strategic thinking regarding future activities that will be required as the OOG activities develop and identification of partnerships and potential avenues of funding.
The post is within the Air, Land and Water Team within Research, Assessment and Evaluation. The team provides expert technical advice at a national level. We work closely with colleagues in Head Office and in Operations as well as external organisations to deliver functional, business focused solutions based on sound science.
You will have a strong scientific background in air monitoring and/or modelling with experience in an academic or industrial setting and a relevant post-graduate degree and probably a higher research degree.
You will need experience in specifying and managing projects as well as the capability of delivering technically advanced work yourself. Some aspects may be outside your area of technical expertise, but you must have the confidence, initiative and skills to succeed, seeking out advice and support as needed. You must be confident in understanding technical issues in their wider environmental contexts and in communicating them to a range of stakeholders, such as expert technical teams in consultancies or research institutes. You should have experience of working with Government, Academia and Industry, particularly on large-scale collaborative projects. You'll have experience in shaping organisation approaches and delivery and be able to demonstrate how you have achieved results in your previous roles.
