Our fluvial modelling and forecasting officers provide technical advice to help build a country more resilient to climate change.

As a fluvial modelling/forecasting officer your skills (including hydrology, forecasting, natural flood management or integrated water modelling) will help inform our partners in how to appropriately manage flood risk at a community or national scale. This ranges from advising on flood defence schemes, building real time models to use in our flood warning service, or advising on development in the flood plain.

You will have modelling experience, and be able to perform at a competent officer level. You will have opportunity to develop/specialise your skills and complete your professional accreditation.

In this role, you will:

• Build, develop, review, audit and assure fluvial models and undertake a technical officer role within project teams.

• Select the most appropriate tools and techniques and advise the organisation on hydrological assessments and/or hydraulic modelling approaches.

• Provide technical advice in fluvial flood modelling to the Environment Agency and partner organisations.

• Continue to develop your technical skills and build the skills and knowledge of your peers.

• Ensure diversity and inclusivity, nurturing others viewpoints and making time to help develop your colleagues and yourself.
Evidence and Risk teams provide evidence and advice on a range of environmental risks. Our hydrological expertise alongside our fluvial and coastal modelling and forecasting information is used in decision making for flood and coast risk management including new and improved flood defences, land use planning (to avoid inappropriate development in the floodplain) and incident management, including emergency planning, response and recovery, so that we can better prepared and more resilient to hazards.
Through experience to date you will be able to demonstrate some of the following:

• Knowledge and experience of river modelling / flood forecasting, either in a real-time or ‘non-real time’ environment
• Experience in creating and editing models using standard commercial modelling packages
• Experience reviewing hydraulic models
• Experience in data processing and GIS software packages
• Ability to achieve results, directly and through others.
• Experience in prioritising and managing your workload effectively
• Good judgment, problem solving and decision making skills;
• You will demonstrate skills in influencing and persuading people
• Data management and standards will be a core part of your work
• Excellent communication skills, enjoys building relationships, collaborating and agreeing expectations to deliver outcomes.
Focuses on customers and partners
• Understand the business of FCRM (Flood and coastal Risk Management) and the importance of evidence and risk.
